Dr. David Moessner 2023 Kenneth W. Clark Lectures

The Divinity School at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, hosts a prestigious annual lecture series on New Testament studies and textual criticism in memory of Kenneth W. Clark. Dr. Moessner delivered the Clark Lectures on March 21–22, 2023. He spoke first on “The Gospel of Luke: ‘The Christ Must Suffer,’” and then on “The Acts of the Apostles: Paul as the Suffering Christ to the ‘End of the Earth.’” These lectures gave the audiences a preview of re-search which will be part of his forthcoming monograph on Ancient Greek Narrative Hermeneutics and the Gospels.

The Winter 2022 issue of TCU Magazine featured Dr. Moessner’s work as an editor for a revised translation of the Gospel of Luke in the (now published!) New Revised Standard Version, Updated Edition (NRSVue), with an interview. For the expanded edition of the story, you can read the full story here.

Dr. Moessner was invited to Varna, Bulgaria (on the Black Sea) during the week of September 11–17, 2022, to participate in the Ninth East-West Symposium of New Testament Scholars. These Symposia are an initiative of the European Liaison Committee of the Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas to bring reconciliation between the Eastern Orthodox and Western Roman Catholic and Protestant churches. Dr. Moessner joined a group of eminent scholars primarily from Western Europe and from former Warsaw Pact eastern-European countries. He presented a study of “Luke and Paul: Uniting East and West,” to appear in the conference volume.

During the 2019 Fall semester, Prof. Moessner is visiting the University of Regensburg (Germany) as a Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Advanced Studies. The Centre’s project is Beyond Canon: Heterotopias of Religious Authority in Ancient Christianity
