Undergraduate Thesis Program

The TCU Department of Political Science Thesis Program provides motivated students with the opportunity to conduct original research on a topic of their choice under the guidance of faculty mentorship during their final year of college. Designed for students seeking advanced research experience, the thesis program allows participants to explore significant political questions while developing analytical, methodological, and writing skills essential for academic and professional success.

Students in the program work closely with a faculty mentor to design and execute a research project that aligns with their academic interests and coursework. Over the course of the program, students identify a research question, conduct a literature review, gather and analyze evidence, and produce a substantial written thesis.

The thesis program spans (at minimum) two semesters. In the first semester, to be completed at least one semester before a students’ final semester (for example, typically in spring of junior year or fall of senior year), students develop and refine their research ideas into a research proposal through enrollment in the POSC 40001 Research Tutorial class with the faculty director of the thesis program. During the second semester, students complete their independent research under the mentorship of their advisor, write the final thesis, and present their findings to faculty and peers.

The thesis provides valuable experience in research, writing, and critical analysis while building close mentoring relationships with faculty. It is excellent preparation for graduate school, law school, and careers in policy, government, and public service.

Applications to the thesis program are open to all declared Political Science majors in the semester before taking POSC 40001. Admission to the program is competitive and generally requires strong academic performance in political science coursework. Applications will be approved by the faculty director of the thesis program in consultation with other department members. Interested students are encouraged to begin discussing potential thesis topics with faculty during their junior year. Honors College students completing a thesis earn departmental honors from the TCU Honors College.

Applications are due 4/1/26 to Dr. Emily M. Farris, faculty director of the thesis program. To apply, students must submit a copy of their degree progress report, application statement of 300-500 words explaining their interest and preparation for the thesis, and names of two Political Science faculty members who would recommend you for the program. The application link is here.
